Eastern Ski Resort Areas In Transition – Ellicottville, New York

Two mentions in just over two weeks in the New York Times, and a #5 ranking in Ski Magazine’s 2007 top eastern ski resorts. Ellicottville, NY … the quaint western New York ski town located 50 miles south of Buffalo is making the news.

Ski resort areas in transition. The Rocky Mountains are obviously not alone in witnessing their small mountain villages in a state of growth and change. Described as “an unpretentious town where everyone feels welcome”, Ellicottville was just recently featured in the January 11th, NY Times article, New York’s Overlooked Ski Resorts.

Today’s New York Times, The Ski Town That Aspen Used to Be Like also talks about the ”down home” feel but adds in the reality and challenges of rising real estate costs … ”The village itself is in transition, with tourism and a still-thriving vacation-home market causing some angst in certain quarters.”

Keeping it real, managing growth, and preserving the ”down home” feel. Easier said than done … but nonetheless worth all the effort if it helps preserve the unique character that has always been a key factor in ski town appeal.
